Immunity is nothing but the body’s defensive system that kicks into play every time an infection or toxin enters the body. It comprises a series of systemised white blood cells and antibodies that isolate the infection and work on it to eliminate it. The stronger the immune system, the better it functions when fighting infections inside the body.

Children have lower immunity than adults, because their bodies are still growing and adapting to the environment. If your child falls ill often, it could be due to low immunity – but you can increase it.

How to increase immunity in kids

It mostly boils down to daily nutrition and your child’s activity levels. An active child with good personal hygiene and a healthy diet, is less likely to fall ill often. Consider these tips on how to increase immunity in kids:

* Maintain good hand hygiene: Infectious germs are often passed from the hands to the nose/eyes/mouth and from there, the common cold and fever are incubated inside the body. Teach your child to wash their hands with soap, and to not touch others’ tissues or kerchiefs. They may even use a kids’ hand sanitiser.

* Enrich their milk with nutrients: Your child may balk at the idea of drinking a glass of plain milk. So why not add a nutritious milk drink powder to the milk and lend it a delicious creamy vanilla flavour that your child cannot resist? * Encourage activity: If you find your child is plonked in front of the TV or playing a mobile phone games instead of going out to play, then you need to take them out to run and get some fresh air. Exercise together as a family if you want your child to enjoy the activity more.

* Let the child sleep: Your child’s immune system will benefit tremendously from long hours of sleep. Children sleep more than adults do, so set sleep times – 8 hours is a minimum requirement – for school nights.
